Stage 3 (320-380bhp)
The stage 3 level of 200SX tuning increases the power output of the engine
further roughly up to 380bhp and sometimes even more depending on the condition
of the SR20DET engine & how well the remapping has been done on your S14.
Most people are very satisfied and happy at this level of 200SX tuning for most types of driving. At this level of tune, you are pretty much at the limit of the SR20DET engine internals and should consider fitting a 1.2mm metal head gasket to maintain reliability. However, tests conducted on the SXOC have proven that the engine can be pushed even further past the 400bhp mark! Very impressive!
Your wallet will also be damaged this time round as the 200SX tuning parts you’ll need will cost you a fair bit of money, but nowhere near the amount needed to buy an all out track ready sports car.
Not only the SR20DET engine, but you’ll also be at the limit of the standard S14 gearbox. The life of your S14 gearbox totally depends on your driving style whether you are using your car on track, fast road driving, drag racing or drift racing.
Please see my parts catalogue for the best deals on the parts below.
Turbo A standard S14 T28 turbo can just about flow enough air for 320bhp so a replacement 200SX turbo would definitely be on the cards. I would recommend a Garrett GT2871R as I’ve heard nothing but good things about this turbo when used in conjunction with the SR20DET engine. It has slightly more lag compared to the standard S14 T28 unit but gives a much bigger punch and plenty of torque.
Air Flow Meter (AFM) The standard S14 air flow meter can only handle up to 320bhp or less so it is necessary to go for an AFM that can allow the engine to flow more air. More than often, people tend to go for the AFM from the Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo Z32 as they are well priced and can handle a ridiculous amount of air flow. You would also need the Nissan 300ZX intake kit fitting to your new AFM as the standard S14 intake kit will be too small in diameter.
Oil Cooler More than likely your engine bay temps will get very hot after tuning the SR20DET, especially if you are using your S14 for track, drag or drift work so a decent oil cooler is highly recommended maybe along with an oil temp gauge.
Remap Once you have had the AFM and turbo fitted to your S14, you will need to have the engine remapped straight away as the SR20DET engine won’t run well until it has been remapped. Once the remap has been complete in conjunction with extra boost pressure, you’ll have a very fast S14 sports car capable of giving a fright to a lot of exotic cars especially when you factor in the low weight of the S14. Enjoy!
Look out for Part 2 of my 200SX tuning guide which will focus on upgrading the brakes, tires and suspension of your S14. Thanks for reading and drive safe!
